Obituary for Kathryn Roberts Mincey

Kathryn Roberts Mincey, 56, of Durham, NC passed away Saturday, June 9, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Kathy was a 1979 graduate of Northern High School and went on to graduate from UNC Chapel Hill in 1983 with a degree in elementary education. After graduation she worked briefly at Home Savings and Loan before working as a teacher in Durham Public Schools at Oak Grove Elementary. She worked several years teaching 4th grade and kindergarten, as well as working as a teacher at Asbury Preschool. She then went to work in the corporate world, working at several home loan companies, before finding her permanent career at FHI360 in Durham. FHI was a job she truly loved as a User Support Associate in their Information Solutions & Service Dept. She combined her love of teaching with her love of people in her interactions with those in many countries around the globe. She loved her work and she loved her colleagues at FHI where she worked for almost 25 years. Kathy also loved reading, crafting jewelry, going to the beach, and anything Carolina. She was a devoted Carolina fan and cheered for her Tarheels faithfully. But what Kathy adored the most were her two sons. She devoted her life to their stability, happiness, and success and was so proud to be their mom. Kathy also loved her church family. She was a lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church and volunteered in many capacities there including teacher, VBS director, handbell ringer, and choir member. She will be missed by the many who loved her there and was grateful for their support during her illness.

Kathy leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Zach Mincey of Charlotte, Garrett Mincey of the home, her father, Dan Roberts (wife, Linda) of Cary, her mother, Barbara Long (husband, John) of Durham, who selflessly devoted herself as Kathy’s main caregiver, a sister, Jan R Stutts (husband, Mike) of Durham, a step-daughter, Krystal Barillari (husband Reese and son, Hudson) of Atlanta, GA, three nephews, Danny (wife Caroline), Derek (wife Karla), and Jeff, four nieces, Kate, Lauren, Leah, and Jennifer, and one great-niece, Miller. She also leaves her group of girlfriends with whom she shared life and who supported her through this illness, x-husband and friend, Glenn Mincey, who helped with much of her health care in the last months, for which the family was grateful, her dear mother-in-law, Nell Mincey, as well as the entire Mincey clan with whom she remained close. The family wishes to thank the doctors who cared for Kathy at Duke Medical Center as well as the nurses and staff on the 6300 unit for their compassionate care, and for Duke Hospice Care at home.

All who knew Kathy witnessed her strength as a single mother, her determination to give her sons a life that was full of educational and life-learning experiences, and her passion in all things she tackled. These traits remained evident by her strength in the face of this disease, her determination as a provider for her sons to keep their lives as normal as possible, and her passion for the life she was given.

The loss of Kathy leaves a hole in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, but we treasure the hope and security we have that we will see her again soon.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 17th at 3:00 PM at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2809 Guess Rd, Durham, NC
