Obituary for Mary Helen Cheek Ball

DURHAM: Mrs. Mary Helen Cheek Ball passed away on May 22, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 10, 1917 to the late William Fletcher and Sallie Spivey Burden Cheek. She was also predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Edwin Lyon Ball, Sr. as well as six brothers, Claiborne, William, Vernon, Victor, Joseph, and Paul Cheek. She was the youngest and only girl growing up with six older, doting brothers. She attended UNC Women's College in Greensboro and went on to work various jobs including in the Duke University purchasing department. After raising three children, she returned to the work force as a teaching assistant for the Durham City Schools at C. C. Spaulding Elementary School and George Watts Elementary School.

She was a lifelong member of Temple Baptist Church and attended regularly until her health declined. At one time or another she was the pianist in every department of the church as well as serving on numerous committees throughout her life. She was a member of the Sunshine Bible Class where she dearly cherished her friendships with her class members. Her love of her Lord was demonstrated on a daily basis by the way she treated others as well as her selfless dedication to her family. She always put the needs and wishes of her family members above her own.

She is survived by her 3 children, Vicki Ball Spain (Ronald), Edwin Lyon Ball, Jr. (Ellen), and Joy Ball Falcon (Thomas). She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren, David Spain, Mary Spain Colella (Steven), Matthew Spain (Aislinn), Ryan Falcon and Cameron Falcon as well as her 3 great grandchildren, Caitlyn and Avery Colella and Scout Spain. She adored them all, and they adored her.

The family would like to thank all of her extended family and friends for their loving support during this long journey. They would also like to thank Dr. Bristol Winslow and Duke Homecare and Hospice for the compassionate care she received.
