Obituary for Rev. Dr. Lewis E. McMannen

Rev. Dr. Lewis E. McMannen passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 in Ft. Myers, Florida. He was born on Sept. 7, 1931 in Durham, N.C. to George T. and Audrey (Hamlet) McMannen, and was the great-grandson of the Rev. John A. McMannen, a founder of Durham County.

Dr. McMannen graduated from Campbell University and taught in Cumberland and Granville Counties. He pastored churches in Johnston, Cumberland and Granville Counties, and earned a Doctorate at Union Theological Seminary, serving as Chaplain at Oxford Orphanage.

Dr. McMannen was a decorated Korean War veteran. In 1950, he was assigned to the 38th Infantry Regiment and 2nd Infantry Division, and participated in five of the major battles of the war. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Sudan Shriner.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Janet McMannen, his daughters, Renée (Keith Beard) and Holly (Doug Rogers); two brothers, Bobby, and Archie, along with four grandsons, Walt Rogers, Miles Rogers, Carl Roche (Kathy) and Kevin Roche (Rebekah), and four great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his daughter, Cindy McMannen Roche, his sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Tyson, and his brothers, George, Jr. and Hubert, as well as his parents.

Dr. McMannen enjoyed his extensive travels, creating friendships around the world.

A private memorial service will be held May 25th, with entombment at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham, NC. Arrangements are being made by Clements Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hope Hospice of Fort Myers, Florida or McMannen UMC.
