Obituary for Madelyn G. Beauvais

Madelyn Joyce Goodhue Beauvais was born on April 5, 1919 in Fairfax, Vt the youngest of 7 children. Her parents were Marshall Jerry Goodhue and Ida Mae Rushlow Goodhue. Her parents and siblings, Irena, Stella, Frances, Olin, Eleanor, and Carol all preceded her in death. Several of them died during the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic, and Mom has related that her mother actually had the flu while carrying her in 1919. She was pretty lucky to have lived herself.

Madelyn went to Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax and then to the University of Vermont graduating with a teacher’s degree. She taught for several years before meeting Rowland Beauvais in 1939 and marrying on August 3, 1940. Madelyn and Rowland had two children; Gail born in 1942 and Ron in 1949. Gail married Bob Niemyski and they live in Hillsborough, and Ron married Nancy Jones Fountain and they also live in Hillsborough. Madelyn has three grandchildren: Lawrence Fountain, Vinton Fountain, and Moyer Fountain and four great grandchildren: LM, Travis, Roy and Decatur Fountain. Madelyn is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Madelyn was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Hillsborough for many years.

For the past year, a home nursing assistant, Ms. Margarita Haas, helped with her daily care and Madelyn and Margarita became very fond of each other, and we are thankful she was with us. The family also wishes to say a special thanks to our Duke Hospice team who exhibited a great deal of compassion and professionalism and helped in the care of our mom the last few months.

Madelyn’s husband Rowland was a dairy farmer and she always lived a simple farmer’s life. She had a strength of character that is seldom seen and her straight forward logical approach to life was very instructive to Gail and Ron. We learned much from our mother: there is no compromise to hard work; think logically and fairly; don’t ever give up and love your family.

We were so lucky to have had her for 99 years.

In lieu of flower, you may consider a gift in Mom’s name to: Duke Homecare and Hospice, Office of Development, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 19th at Holy Family Catholic Church in Hillsborough.
