Obituary for Rev. Marilyn K. Shipman

Bahama: The Reverend Marilyn K. Shipman, 74, died Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at Duke Regional Hospital. Mrs. Shipman was a master’s level nurse and an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church.

She was born in Brighton, Colorado, the daughter of the late Bernard Edward Koeppen and Helen Burkhardt Koeppen.

Rev. Shipman is survived by her husband of almost fifty-one years, Dennis Robert Shipman, as well as her three sons, Edward G. Shipman, James R. Shipman, and William J. Shipman, and two grandsons, Elijah R. Shipman and Jesse A. Shipman. She is also survived by one brother, Bernard E. Koeppen (Joan) and one sister, Lynn Koeppen. She was preceded in death by one other sister, Susan Koeppen Overgard.

She was a committed mental health nurse at John Umstead Hospital and Central Regional Hospital in Butner. For ten years she served as pastor of Massey’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She then served as pastor of Riverview, Ellis Chapel and Mt. Tabor United Methodist Churches in Bahama for eighteen years before retirement in 2012.

A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1320 Umstead Rd, Durham, NC 27712, with the Reverend Dr. Bryan Faggart and the Reverend Dr. Bill Simpson on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service in the Aldersgate Fellowship Hall.

The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral Home, Durham, NC.
