Obituary for Evelyn M. Taylor

DURHAM- Peacefully, surrounded by family, Mrs. Evelyn Mills Taylor went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 24, 2018.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by two sons; Herbert A Taylor II and Donna Creese of Arlington, VA and Ronnie G Taylor and wife Lisa Cole Taylor of Greensboro NC and one grandson, Cole Elliott Taylor.
Evelyn was born in Craven County on June 30, 1926. She grew up in New Bern with her 6 siblings, Marvin, Fred Jr, Myrtle, Mildred, Lill and Ethel. Evelyn graduated from East Carolina University in 1949 with a degree in Home Economics and went on to become a well-respected, thought leader, Educator and Teacher. She was a life-long member of Grace Baptist Church, where she was very active in so many of the ministries.
In 1950, she married her beloved husband, Herbert A Taylor. Together, they shared an amazing journey for 57 loving years until his passing in 2007. Evelyn was a gentle, sweet and loving soul that always centered her life around caring for others; none more evident than with her distinguished teaching career. Beginning in 1969, when she fulfilled a dream of the late Sarah Barker and opened a day-care center designed to meet the special needs of children with developmental disabilities. Initially, working with four students from the annex of an estate located on Roxboro Road, to five years later in 1974, with the help of many public and private sponsors, a new, modern building was constructed on Broad Street. With Mrs. Taylor as Director, this school would come to represent joy and hope for over 45 Durham families at capacity. Later, this school would be incorporated into the Durham County School System. Upon her retirement in 1996 – Mrs. Taylor would be recognized by a Humanitarian/Life Service Award from the City of Durham.
A service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday, March 28th at 11 a.m. at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad St, Durham, NC with Dr. Gerald Goodwin officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
Online condolences can be made at www.clementsfuneralservice.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice Home of High Point, 1801 Westchester Dr., High Point, NC 27262.
We joyfully celebrate her beautiful life.
