Obituary for Jimmy Lanham Strickland

DURHAM: Jimmie Lanham Strickland, 88, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the VA Medical Center in Durham. He was born in Gilford Co., to the late Melvin and Banna Strickland. In addition to his parents, Mr. Strickland was also predeceased by sister, Carolyn Strickland Nason; brothers, Ronnie Strickland, Wayne Strickland, and William Strickland.

He was a graduate of Durham High School, Class of 1947 as well as a graduate of an electronic trade school in Durham. Mr. Strickland was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired with Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company.

Mr. Strickland is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Hazel Strickland; son, James Hilliard (Debra); daughter, Shelia Echols (Earl); grandchildren, Michael Hilliard, Consuelo Jordan (Josh), Tara Jones (Bill), Angie Fogleman (Wiley), Amy Turner, April Hilliard; 10 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; sister-in-laws, Judy Strickland, Shirley Strickland; brother-in-law, Bob Nason; and special friend, Billy Frazier.

A memorial service will be held 11 am, Thursday, January 25 at Edgewood Baptist Church in Durham with Rev. Earl P. Echols, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
