Obituary for William Andrews

William A. “Bill” Andrews of Durham, NC passed away on November 7, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87. He was born in Durham, NC on May 23, 1931 to the late William P. and Lillie Mae Wright Andrews.

Bill grew up in Orange County and graduated from Hillsborough (Hillsboro) High School in 1949. He served three years in the U. S. Naval Reserve prior to his employment at Duke Power Company’s Eno power plant. He retired from Duke Power in 1986 as an Area Superintendent after 37 years of employment. He was active in the Duke Energy Retirees Association, which recognized him as the 2006 Volunteer of the Year for his commitment to regular performances with his country music band, especially for the long term residents at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham. Bill was a lifelong member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Orange County.

Bill’s life-long love for making music was clear to everyone who knew him. He could expertly play any instrument at hand whether it was a rhythm or electric guitar, a mandolin, a piano or the fiddle. He and his former band, The Beacons, played gospel and country music at local events for many years. After the band disbanded, he and a few friends continued playing for veterans, church groups and nursing home residents.

Bill also enjoyed sports, whether participating, — as a young man he was a member of the local community baseball team — attending, or watching, especially Duke-Carolina basketball and football games. He always supported ACC teams when they played outside the conference.

Bill’s lively sense of humor and fun-loving antics were legendary with his family and friends. He always enjoyed a good joke and had a totally infectious laugh. He was happiest when he was with his family or outdoors – whether he was fishing or hunting or tending his garden or just cutting wood.

Bill is survived by his wife of 45 years, Bonnie Cheek Andrews. With his former wife, Nell Franklin Andrews, he leaves his three children: Susan Andrews Halkiotis (Stephen) and William Joseph Andrews of Hillsborough and Patricia Ellen Andrews of Durham. Also, a step-son Paul Steelman of Kinston. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren Katherine Dovenbarger Knowles (Dan) and Matthew Dovenbarger (Meghan) of Hillsborough NC, Heather Turner of Durham, Emily A. Wright (Mike) of Suffolk VA., Jennifer A. Parks (William) of Courtland VA, Melissa A. Evans (Pat) of Asheville NC and Christopher Andrews of Durham NC and 18 great grandchildren. Survivors also include beloved cousins Carolyn Babcock Williams and her husband John Williams of Orlando, Florida, Jaclyn Williams of Hillsborough, NC, and Harold Andrews and his wife Jeanne of Chapel Hill.

The family is especially grateful to Duke Hospice, Alex Wahome and Pastor Sibrian who lovingly cared for Bill during his final illness.

Visitation will be at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, 4511 Old State Hwy 10, Durham, NC, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 11, prior to services beginning at 2:00 pm. Commitment and burial will follow at the Mt. Hermon Church Cemetery.

The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. in Durham. Online condolences may be sent to www.clementsfuneralservice.com.
