Obituary for Walter Benjamin Paschall

DURHAM: Walter Benjamin Paschall, 93, of Durham passed away peacefully at home on December 7, 2018. Walter was born on January 25, 1925, the third of eight children born to the late Donald Freeland Paschall, Sr and Elsie Griffin Paschall.

Being both a child of strong and determined parents and of the Great Depression, he learned early in life the value of hard work, saving for a rainy day and conserving your resources. He loved antiques and collectibles and was definitely someone who believed “they just don’t make anything as good as they used to”. He preferred to repair his own things rather than discarding them in favor of shiny new ones. When out at his building, he was an extremely creative man and when somebody needed something, he could usually figure out how to build it for them. It amazed people that with just a few tools, he could turn some wood, nails and his ever-present black electrical tape into just about anything you could ever need. To his family, he seemed to be able to do just about anything.

Walter was a lineman for Duke Power Company, retiring after 34 years of proud and distinguished service. He loved to talk about his days as a lineman and he always stayed in touch with at least some of the “Duke Power boys”. Even after his retirement, he continued to get up every day and get to work on something. Whether it was driving his only grandchild to and from school or lovingly running her and her friends around, working on his old treasures and making new ones out in his workshop, working out in his yard, or just hanging out with friends and loved ones at the Country Store, Walter hated wasting time and sitting idle. He was a fiercely independent man, preferring to be the one giving help rather than receiving it. In recent years, when he wasn’t able to do everything by himself, he still insisted on participating as much as possible, never being satisfied with simply being an observer. He was happiest being outside, tinkering in his shed or sitting in the sunroom he built, just watching the wildlife and keeping a watchful eye on the land he loved so much.

Walter had a tender heart for animals, a trait for which all the Paschall men are known. He fed the birds, squirrels and deer for decades and they seemed to sense his fondness for them, as the deer would lay down in his yard and rest at night.

He adored any and every kind of animal and along with his wife, passed that love onto his daughter then to his granddaughter. He loved all of their pets as if they were his own and he will be greatly missed by his granddaughter’s three cats, George, Molly and Raven.

He did things his own way and always lived his life on his own terms. When his health would no longer allow him to live the only way he knew how to, he decided the time had come to hang up his Country Store hat and join the family and friends that went on before him. He loved life but he knew that one day, each of us must leave our earthly body behind and trust that our soul is in greater hands. His family is comforted knowing he was able to take that final journey the way he had hoped to, in the home he had loved so much.

Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mildred Ward Paschall; five of his seven siblings, Donald F. Paschall, Jr, Alton Paschall, Thelma Paschall Moore, Robert “Bob” L. Paschall and his wife Gladys, and Josephine Paschall Mangum and her husband Carpenter “Buddy”; and his son-in-law, William “Bill” V. Ackert.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Paschall Ackert(Brian Dodge) of Durham; the son that he never had, his nephew Donald(Debbie) F. Paschall III, of Hillsborough; his granddaughter, Tiffany Brooke Ackert of Durham; his sister, Mary(Claiborne “Tip”) Paschall Ellis of Durham; his brother, Wayne(Jackie) Paschall of Durham; his maternal aunt, Margie Griffin Whitfield; his special niece who sent cards and called him on every holiday and birthday through the years, Arbutus “Beauty” Ann Gadd of Corpus Christi, TX; his close friend, Dan Vogel of Durham, who helped him with the house and yard chores over the last few years as well as blessing him with frequent companionship and being someone to whom he could teach many of his favorite things; and many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Emergency Dept, the Respiratory Care Dept, and the Critical Care Unit at Duke Regional Hospital as well as the care team at Heartland Hospice for the highly competent and compassionate care they gave to Mr. Paschall during his recent hospitalization and his final return home.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12th at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Rev. Rich Goodier officiating. The family will receive friend prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services in Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Donald “Donnie” F. Paschall IV, Jeremy Paschall, Terry Paschall, Gary Paschall, David Paschall and Dan Vogel.
