Obituary for Robert Lee Whitfield, Jr.

CHAPEL HILL: Robert Lee Whitfield, Jr., 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at his home in Chapel Hill. He was born in Greensboro, NC to the late Robert Lee Whitfield and Evelyn White Whitfield. In addition to his parents, Mr. Whitfield was also predeceased by his wife, Miyako Nagata Whitfield.

In his twenties Robert voluntarily joined the US Army stationed in Japan. This is where he met his lifelong partner and wife, Miyako (Mikki). Professionally Robert was a businessman with positions at Allstate and Duke University before owning a business located in Chapel Hill, Electronic Security Systems, Inc. His hobbies included playing the guitar, and coin and art collecting, which he enjoyed immensely during his early retirement years.

Mr. Whitfield is survived by his daughter, Dana Mangum (Bobby); son, Robert Tadao Whitfield; grandchildren, Christopher Lee Mangum, Michael Whitfield Mangum, Robert Walker Whitfield, Brennan Lea Whitfield; and brother, Dale Roy Whitfield (Anne).

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill, NC, 27514.
