Obituary for Melvia Haas

DURHAM: Melvia Lou (Zechman) Haas, 84, passed away on Friday, March 08, 2019 at her home in Durham. She was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania to the late LeRoy Henry Zechman and Vera Drye Zechman. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Haas was predeceased by her sisters, Caroline Weidenheimer, Betty Fey, Georgine Bolich, and Susan Margavage.

Mrs. Haas is survived by her husband, Charles Haas; sons, Charles Haas (Barbara), Curtis Haas (Diane); daughters, Constance Chappell (Larry), Kathleen Franklin (Bobby), Cynthia Kalberer (Jim); brother, Robert Zechman (Darlene); and sister, Gloria Kistler (Art). She also is survived by grandchildren (Jenny West (Kirk), Janna Farlow (Sam), Robby Franklin, and Charlie Franklin (Heather), Carl and Erik Haas, Colin Haas, and Jacob Kalberer; as well as, great-grandchildren Will, Lane, and Charley West; Beckett and Ada Grace Farlow.

A private family service will be held on March 13, 2019. A celebration of Melvia’s life will be held on April 13, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Durham, NC. Her ashes will be interred at a later date on the Friedens Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Ringgold, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Our Savior Lutheran Church at 2109 N. Duke St., Durham, NC 27704.

The family wishes to express their thanks to the Duke Hospice and Home Care Staff, and the attending BAYADA Home Care aides for their compassion and comfort.
