Obituary for John Harold Mackay

Pittsboro: John Harold (“Jack”) Mackay, 84, died peacefully on Monday, November 5, at The Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro. He was born in Bristol, VA, on March 30, 1934, to the late Harold G. and Gertrude M. Mackay.
Jack lived his early childhood years in Virginia before moving to Winston-Salem and then on to Greensboro, where his father served as minister of Shannon Hills Bible Chapel. Jack and his family spent summers in Ontario, Canada, where his father worked in the area as a minister. Jack attended Curry School in Greensboro where he was active in sports and graduated in 1952. Following graduation, Jack attended Elon College for two years and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. Jack was honorably discharged from the Army and came home to marry the former Betty Lou Coble of Greensboro. After their marriage, Jack completed his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. He embarked on an accounting career in the textile industry after college, spending his longest tenure with Burlington Industries. His career sent him to places far and wide including Ireland and Puerto Rico, two of his favorite job sites. In addition to traveling for his job, Jack enjoyed international travel with his family, including traveling to the former Soviet Union, Europe and the Hawaiian Islands.
Jack was a long-time member of Shannon Hills Bible Chapel in Greensboro. In addition to travel, his hobbies and interests included music and sports, particularly support of the UNC Tar Heels.
Jack is survived by his wife of more than fifty years, Betty. He is also survived by his son, Mike (Kelly) of Raleigh, and grandchildren, Colin and Cameron of Raleigh; brothers, Stan (Helen) and Ron (June) of Greensboro; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to acknowledge the care and compassion Jack received during his last few years from the staff at Pittsboro Christian Village, The Laurels of Chatham and Heartland Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pittsboro Christian Village and Heartland Hospice.
A funeral service will be held at the mausoleum chapel at Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro at 2 p.m. on November 7, 2018, with visitation immediately preceding. The family is under the care of Clements Funeral and Cremation Services of Durham. Online condolences may be made at www.clementsfuneralservice.com.
