Obituary for H. Beaman Smith

H. Beaman Smith died early Monday morning, March 4, 2019. He was only 73, but lived a great life. He was raised in Takoma Park, Maryland and attended the University of Maryland for both undergraduate and graduate school. He was, for a time, a drummer in the Redskins band. After graduating, he served in the Peace Corps in the Philippines, and then had an eclectic variety of vocations: He was a school teacher, the head of a honey company (Smith Family Honey!), the manager of a plumbing company (Fry Plumbing), a bank director (Community Bank of the Chesapeake), and the founder of a computer services company (Accoware Systems) before most of us knew what computers even were.

He was married to Margaret Lyerly Smith for 47 years, during almost all of which they lived in Accokeek, Maryland. Maggie and Beaman Smith had two children, Alia Lyerly Smith and Grahme ("Gray") Beaman Smith, and five grandchildren: Lyerly ("Lyra") Smith Kois, 13, and Harper Stewart Kois, 11 (Alia's children with husband Dan Kois) and Charles Beaman Smith, 6, Theodore Alan Smith, 4, and Magnolia "Lola" Muir Smith, 1 (Gray's children with wife Emilie Gantt Smith). He's also survived by his amazing siblings Roland Smith and Joan Antoinette Moore, as well as many nieces and nephews and countless beloved friends (as well as his best canine buddy, Kailua).

Beaman loved golf and peanut butter and science fiction and dried cherries and fishing, and, later in life, running. He had a great affinity for bungee cords. The fallen leaves of the Moyaone Reserve were his enemy, but he vanquished them every autumn. We will miss him very much.

The family will hold a memorial service in the fall. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Center for Honeybee Research:
