Obituary for Evelyn Thompson Overby

LENOIR – Mrs. Evelyn Thompson Overby, 91, formerly of Durham, NC, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, September 17, 2018. Mrs. Overby was born November 4, 1926 to the late Sebern Isaiah “Si” and Vera F. Thompson. In addition to her parents, her first husband Teddy Lincoln Rasberry (killed in WWII), and her loving husband of 55 years, Bruce L. Overby predeceased her.
A native of Durham, Mrs. Overby spent twenty plus years as a full-time wife and mother. During that time she organized and was the first director of the Asbury Week-Day School at her church. She joined the work force at age 50 and retired from Durham’s District Court at age 65. At age 85 she retired from the law firm, Nick Galifianakis & Associates.
Mrs. Overby was an active member of Durham’s Asbury United Methodist Church for 66 years. In Durham she was also active in Durham’s Jaycettes, Elks Auxiliary, the Durham Roosterette Club, and Durham High School Forever. In 2014 she moved to Lenoir, NC and transferred her church membership to Trinity United Methodist Church. Mrs. Overby always enjoyed family, church, knitting and crocheting, playing bridge, exercise, volunteering and visiting shut-ins.
One of her proudest occasions was in 1987 when the Durham Chamber of Commerce named her “Mother of the Year.”
Surviving are five children: Tomi O. Register (Julius), Kent Overby (Kim), Johnny Overby (Julie), Pam O. Pfeil (Gordon), and Robert “Bud” Overby (Lisa); 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; one sister, Barbara T. Mullis of Winston-Salem, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad St, Durham, NC on Monday, September 24 at 12 noon, the service will follow at 1:00 pm. The Reverend Matt Emory of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lenoir will officiate, and her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asbury Pre- School, Asbury United Methodist Church, 806 Clarendon St, Durham, NC 27705; Trinity United Methodist Church, 901 Seehorn St, Lenoir, NC 28645; or Caldwell Hospice, 526 Pine Mountain Rd, NC 28645.
