Obituary for Douglass Franklin Dewey

CARRBORO: Douglass Franklin Dewey, beloved educator, passed away October 8, 2018 at age 77. His beautiful wife of 54 years, Barbara Brown Dewey, his younger brother Michael T. Dewey, and his loving family survive him.

Doug was born in Buffalo, NY in 1941 to the late Katherine Monnette Dewey and Franklin James Dewey. Doug’s parents lived in the village of Kenmore, a suburb of Buffalo north of the city. The Dewey family moved to Matanzas, Cuba in the winter of 1949. He was enrolled in the Arturo Echemendia school in Matanzas for primary school, and later Ruston Academy in Havana, Cuba through high school. During that time he boarded with private families in Havana during the school year. He graduated from Ruston Academy in 1960, greatly inspired by his linguistics teacher Mr. James Baker, to seek a career as an educator.

In 1960, the Dewey family moved back to the US, to Johnston City, TN, then moving to Childersburg, AL, and back to Johnston City. In the late 1960s, the Franklin Dewey’s settled in Chapel Hill, NC along Lake Shore Lane.

Doug attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, from 1960 to 1964 where he received his BA in English Literature and met his college sweetheart Barbara Jean Brown. Doug and Barbara independently enrolled in the Peace Corps in 1964 and were sent to Nigeria after getting married in August 1964 to teach English. In Africa they forged lasting friendships with a local tribe in the Niger River delta. After serving their first two years they signed on for an additional two years that was cut short by a civil war between breakaway provinces attempting to set up the Republic of Biafra. After narrowly escaping, they flew out of Cameroon and returned to the United States in 1967, relocating briefly to Minneapolis, Minnesota near Barbara’s family. In 1968, Barbara and Doug relocated to Chapel Hill, where Doug received a stipend to attend Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After living with Doug’s parents for several years, the Doug Dewey’s moved to Carrboro, NC, settling on James Street and then to Lorraine Street in 2002. Doug transitioned from his home in Carrboro to Brookdale Durham in 2014, and his wife Barbara joined him a few years later.

Doug taught spanish, driver’s education and coached the debate team at Chapel Hill High School for 20 years. He was a town icon, well known by students, teachers and parents for his jovial, interactive teaching style. In the mid 1980’s Doug became interested in personal computers, and an avid enthusiast of Clive Sinclair’s ZX Spectrum computer. He then worked at Total Computing Center for several years before transitioning to the US Postal Service computer support teams EDS, TRW and Northrup Grunman, retiring at age 67 in 2008.

Doug is survived by his wife Barbara Dewey of Durham, NC; brother Michael Dewey of State College, PA; his children John Dewey of Durham, NC and Jacqui Marzec of Apex, NC; and grandchildren Joey and Katie Marzec.
