Obituary for Doris Burgess Jannetta Grissom

DURHAM: Mrs. Doris Burgess Jannetta Grissom, 79 passed away peacefully on Monday, June 03, 2019 at Carver Living Center in Durham.

Her first husband of 45 years, Robert P. Jannetta, and her second husband of a short seven months, Charles E. Grissom, predeceases Doris in death. She was born April 25, 1940 in Durham County to the late Bernard and Lottie Burgess but was raised at Mills Home for Children in Thomasville from the young age of five. She remained close to family on both sides and reunited with aunts, uncles and cousins when she returned to Durham as a young woman.

Her daughter whom she most recently lived with, Kim Jannetta Evans and husband Mike; her son, Ernest Jannetta and wife Amy; grandchildren, Savannah Evans, Michael Evans Jr and fiancé Jordan Holmes; Marisa Jannetta, Haiden Jannetta; brother, Donald Burgess; and many nieces and nephews survive Doris.

Doris dedicated her life to her family and was a beloved mother and grandmother. She was especially proud of her grandchildren always asking how they were doing in school/college. She would always ask after Lacrosse games “did they win?” The boys made it easy for her by playing the same sport. She would ask if Marisa was still dancing (and yes, she is involved in Dance in college.) She was proud to tell everyone that cared for her that her oldest grandchild was a Nurse.

In honoring her request there will not be a funeral service. Family, friends, neighbors and caregivers are invited to a Celebration of her Life on Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm at the home of her daughter, 4407 Dula St. Durham, NC.

The family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Eugene Linfors for the compassionate care that he provided over the years for our mother and to Lisa Fuller who was like a family member for her devoted care and love demonstrated daily as she cared for our mother at home.

The family would also like to thank the staff at Carver Living Center and Heartland Hospice for all of their care, support and guidance.

To borrow from a friend, in lieu of flowers please love and care for your family and friends. Show kindness to those with fur and feathers. Bring humor into a part of every day. Stand strong for what is right. Pay an act of kindness forward for our first responders or military. The family wishes for fond memories of Doris to fill the hearts of all who knew her.

The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. in Durham. Online condolences may be sent to www.clementsfuneralservice.com
