Obituary for Coy Brevard Bell, Jr.

MEBANE: On Thursday, September 20th, 2018, Coy Brevard Bell Jr., of Mebane, NC, was called from this earth to join his Heavenly Father. Coy passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Coy was preceded in death by his parents, Coy and Mable, and his sister, Martha Alice Bell Jenkins. Left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Carol, his children, Emily “Bean” O’Dell (Randy), Ginger Riley (John) and Coy Brevard Bell III; his grandchildren Owen O’Dell, Anna Riley, & Jack Riley; his brother George Bell (Carol), and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

After faithfully serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam war – where he truly exemplified the motto “Semper Fidelis” – Coy graduated from his cherished N.C. State University with a B.S. in Education. After a brief stint teaching math, he found his true calling in the car business – which eventually led him to Durham, where he met Carol (“Missy”), the love of his life. They made their home at “the Farm” in Mebane, creating countless memories with family, friends and the many, many animals. “Mister,” as he was affectionately known by many, was also known as “Hunka-Hunka”, “FSIL”, “Roy”, “Big-B” and “Big Daddy.” In addition to his many names, he was infamous for bestowing nicknames on others (Festus, Yucky, & Justine, to name just a few). Coy was the consummate Southern gentleman with a passion for all things Wolfpack.
Coy’s sense of humor, quick wit, and joy for life were unmeasurable. He never met a stranger and had a knack for making everyone he met laugh and feel special. His favorite thing in life was spending time with family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the VA Home Based Primary Care team, especially Linda, Wilma, Katherine, and Turquoise, for their care and friendship, as well as the VA hospice team, especially Michaelene, Michelle, Bee, and Tiffany.

A visitation celebrating Coy will take place on Monday, September 24, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad Street, Durham, NC. A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, September 25, at 1:00 PM at Clements Funeral Home followed by inurnment in the Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, NC. Immediately following the burial, @ 4:00 PM, friends and family will gather at Devine’s Restaurant & Sports Bar, 904 West Main Street in Durham, NC to celebrate Coy’s wonderful life.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Coy’s memory can be sent to Team Rubicon or The Campaign for NC State.

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound... …was blind but now I see”
