ALICIA MERSHON GURTNER MOORE

DURHAM: Alicia Mershon Gurtner Moore was born September 21, 1960 at Watts Hospital in Durham. Mershon passed away quietly on Sunday, December 30, 2018. She was the beloved daughter of Raymond Emil Gurtner, Jr. and Alice Jean Burns Gurtner. She was the devoted sister of Merchele Veronica Gurtner.
Mershon was a member of Yates Baptist Church. She attended Carolina Friends School and graduated Jordan High School Class of 1979. She was a life guard at Croasdaile Country Club during her junior and senior years of high school.
Mershon began her banking career with BB&T. She achieved 35 years of service. Mershon was the Vice President of Community Mortgage Specialist. She was a licensed Real Estate Broker for 32 years. During her service at BB&T, Mershon worked on numerous business leadership organizations. While participating with Professional Women in Building, she raised awareness of business positions for students and dispersed funds to scholarship recipients. Mershon worked ardently with this organization supporting Habitat for Humanity. She lead and presented materials to first time buyers through seminars on behalf of BB&T. She faithfully supported the Durham MLS Office of Continuing Education.
Mershon was an active member of many organizations and charters. She assisted her Grandmother Gurtner in providing Halloween treats at the local VA Hospital through the Red Cross Association. Mershon has been a dutiful member of The Kiwanis Club of the Friendly City. She held numerous leadership positions and had remained President for the past three years. She was instrumental in leading the organization to provide monthly meals to the Ronald McDonald House of Durham and Wake County. Mershon organized a clothing drive with fellow members to provide clothing for the Sgt. Eugene Ashley Center of Wilmington. She was instrumental in beginning a clothing drive for Dress for Success which enables women preparing to re-enter the work force. Mershon was steadfast each Christmas season providing toys for the Domestic Violence Shelter’s Children on location in Wilmington, NC. With Mershon’s infectious laugh and exuberant personality, she was always ready to relay a salacious joke.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Yates Baptist Church: 2819 Chapel Hill Rd., Durham, NC. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service in the Family Life Center at Yates Baptist Church.
Memorial donations may be placed in her honor to Ronald McDonald House: 506 Alexander Ave, Durham, NC 27705; Habitat for Humanity: 215 N Church St, Durham, NC 27701; or the veteran’s organization, Folds of Honor: Department 13, Tulsa, OK 74182.
