Life Legacy

DURHAM: James Earle Pipkin (Jimmy), 71, of Durham, passed away at home on Wednesday February 15. He was born on March 5, 1940 in Durham, North Carolina.

Jimmy attended school in the Durham County school system. He left Durham High School to join the United States Air Force where he served his country in Turkey.

Jimmy’s entire working life was spent in the tire business. He managed various locations for Rigsbee Tire Sales, and later for Ingold Tire and Auto Service Center and Tri-City Tire and Automotive. He had a strong work ethic and prided himself on providing excellent customer service. Jimmy was a hunter as a teenager and enjoyed golfing later in life. Some of his happiest memories were of relaxing and fishing at Kerr Lake. He was a member of and once served as the Exalted Ruler of BPOE Lodge #568, where he enjoyed many nights of dancing and telling tall tales with long-time friends. One of his greatest joys was finishing an expert level crossword puzzle, and he was an avid reader who enthusiastically traded books with friends and family. Jimmy spent countless hours working in his beautifully landscaped yard, and he always made sure the birds and the squirrels were well fed. He also was a fanatical Duke Blue Devils fan. GO BIG BLUE!!!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse James Pipkin and Nellie Magdelene Pipkin. He is survived by his daughter, Toni Pipkin Dyer (Jack); his brothers, Marvin Edward Pipkin of Durham; William (Bill) Stuart Pipkin (Anita) of Henderson; Jesse Norman Pipkin (Sandy) of Cumberland, Virginia; Paul Wayne Pipkin (Barbara) of Creedmoor; Benny Gordon Pipkin (Ann) of Creedmoor; his two sisters, Janice Pipkin Pryor of Creedmoor and Debbie Pipkin Medlin (Randy) of Mebane; several nieces and nephews; former wife and mother of his daughter, Shirley Wallace; and former wife, Tena Pipkin. Jimmy leaves behind his sidekick, Luke, who will forever miss their walks up and down Hillandale Road.

Jimmy is also survived by his long-time companion, Deborah Hilton, to whom the family will always be grateful for her loving care during the good times and the sad times.

The family is sincerely grateful for the compassion and support provided by personnel from Duke HomeCare & Hospice during the last weeks of Jimmy’s life. The family is also appreciative of the care and compassion provided by Dr. Brian Shaner and his nurse, Margaret.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Duke HomeCare & Hospice, Office of Development, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.

A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad Street, Durham, NC, on Sunday, February 19th at 4pm.
