MRS. DOROTHY “DOT” VANDYGRIFF WOODELL

DURHAM: Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Vandygriff Woodell, 88, died Wednesday morning at Hock Family Pavilion. Mrs. Woodell was born and reared in Tullahoma, TN, daughter of the late Ada Hibberd Vandygriff and the late James Newton Vandygriff. It was there she met Woody, the love of her life, at Camp Forrest during World War II. She had been a resident of Durham since 1952, where she and Woody raised their three sons. She and Woody were charter members of Glendale Heights United Methodist Church, Durham, NC. As her sons grew older, she began a career in retail sales at Robbins Ladies Apparel and later Tyler House at Northgate Shopping Center. Dot’s later life revolved around loving and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas James “Woody” Woodell; a son, Richard “Dicky” Woodell; and a grandson, Tyler Woodell.

Mrs. Woodell is survived by sons, Van Woodell and wife, Carol, of Matoaca, VA and David Woodell of Durham; daughter in law, Debra Francis Woodell of Durham; grandchildren, Ashley W. Godwin and husband, Chris, Victoria Woodell, Carson Woodell, Emily Woodell and Mandi Woodell; great grandchildren, Chloe Godwin and Tyler Godwin; lifelong friend Ruth Thompson of Youngsville and her caregiver, Dorothy Noble.

Funeral services will be held Friday 11 a.m. at Glendale Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Adam Brinkley officiating. Burial will follow at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.

Dot requested her family to invite all her friends to join them for coffee and doughnuts Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. at the church fellowship hall to celebrate her love of life. Visitation will follow from 10:00 to 11 a.m. at the church.
