Life Legacy


Joseph “Joe” Calvin Weatherspoon, 86, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Weatherspoon was born in Durham Co., the son of the late Horace McLoyd Weatherspoon and Mary Luti Clark Weatherspoon. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Buck Weatherspoon, Tyree Weatherspoon, Paul Weatherspoon; and his sisters, Ruby Baldwin Phipps, and Margaret Cooke.

Mr. Weatherspoon is survived by his wife, Ruth Hobgood Weatherspoon of Durham; his son, Jeff Weatherspoon; his daughter-in-law, Mamie Weatherspoon; and his grandchild, Kari Weatherspoon of Raleigh.

A funeral service will be held at Clements Funeral Home in Durham on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 2:00pm. Burial will follow at Bay Leaf Baptist Church in Raleigh. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home, prior to the service at 12:30.

Joe loved his country and served in the Navy as a deep sea salvage diver during WWII aboard the USS Chain. He completed his tour of service and attended the University of Mississippi and completed his undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill. He was known to fondly remember his friend and college roommate Andy Griffith. After acquiring his law degree from TC Williams School of Law, in Richmond Virginia he practiced law in Durham for 35 years during which he maintained his law license in both Virginia and North Carolina. Joe was an avid UNC fan all of his life and fondly remembers his third row season tickets for the 1957 undefeated UNC National Championship basketball team.

Community service was very important to Joe. He was the Exalted Ruler of the Durham Elks Lodge #568 and a member and president of the Carolina Sertoma Club as well as past District Governor and State Director.

Joe loved Fork Union Military Academy where his son attended. He co-wrote and formed the first Parent Teachers Association and served as its first president. He took great interest in his son’s continued involvement with the school to this day.
