Obituary for William Kent Cunningham

William Kent “Baz” Cunningham, age 75, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 27th, 2017. He was born in New Martinsville, West Virginia and was the son of Willard “Jess” Cecil Cunningham and Anne Berger Cunningham.

Baz was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church, most recently a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Durham, NC. Throughout his life, he was active in mission and youth work. He was a board member of International Child Care and was committed to helping the people of Haiti for more than 20 years. With first-hand experience, he shared his gift of helping those in need. He organized numerous trips to Haiti and The Dominican Republic, often taking along his family, friends, doctors, nurses, dentists, pastors, and church members.

After earning a Bachelor of Science from West Virginia Wesleyan, Baz earned a Master of Science in chemistry from the University of Utah. He spent his professional career in chemistry and technical sales. He was also a passionate writer of fiction, plays, and musicals and an avid piano player. After retirement, Baz taught courses with Duke University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) in history, religion, and Haiti. He remained active in his pursuits, even after his diagnosis with brain cancer.

Baz is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol Sue Cunningham; first cousin Bill Berger; sons Mark and Jay; daughter Joy; and grandchildren Isabel, Penelope, Owen, Fiona, Audrey, and Josie.

The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral Service, Inc. in Durham. Online condolences may be made at www.clementsfuneralservice.com.The family will host a celebration of Baz’s life at an open house in their home on February 4th, from 2 pm to 4 pm. An informal service will be held in West Virginia this summer.
