Obituary for Virginia Suggs Tillman

DURHAM: Mrs. Virginia Suggs Tillman, 87, went home to be with her Lord and Savior and her beloved Jack on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born in Darlington Co., SC to the late Foster Monroe Suggs and the late Letha Lloyd Suggs. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tillman was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John R. Tillman; brother, Charles E. Suggs; and son-in-law, James H. Byrd.

Mrs. Tillman was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church, the Faith Sunday School Class and the Joy Club at Ridgecrest Baptist Church. In the years of her children growing up, they were blessed to have her to be a stay at home mother who served them and their daddy a hot breakfast each morning and hot supper each evening. She was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes for her family and friends and Barbie doll clothes for her granddaughters. She loved spring with the budding trees, beautiful flowers, the return of her hummingbirds, watching the birds play in the birdbath and rocking on her back deck. Her years at White Lake with her husband, Jack, gave her much pleasure and made them many friends. The mountains in the fall with their changing foliage were a gorgeous sight to her. She absolutely LOVED Christmas, what it meant, all the colorful lights and the time with family. Mrs. Tillman always enjoyed traveling whether by car, bus, ship, plane or train and over the last several years had been blessed to see the beauty of Alaska, the autumn leaves of New England, the blue waters of the Caribbean, Mexico and Disney World at Christmas. She loved going to church, reading her bible, was a huge southern gospel fan who never missed the opportunity to attend a concert, especially if it was Ivan Parker or Janet Paschal singing AND she never failed to bow her head and thank the Lord before a meal no matter how bad she felt.

Mrs. Tillman is survived by her son, Johnny Tillman and wife, Linda; daughters, Donna T. Byrd and Dawne T. Smith and husband, Randy; grandchildren, Jill Long and husband, Todd, Joni Tuck and husband, Jay, Jonathan Byrd, Ashlyn Smith, Brooke Smith, Chase Smith, Cheryl Curtis and Bryan Curtis and wife, Nikki; great grandchildren, Carey Long and wife, Ashley, Brittany Buchanan, Amber Long, Amya Curtis, Cade Curtis, Trinity Tuck and Savannah Tuck; great, great granddaughter, Harper Olivia Long; a sister, Shirley Peele; and numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends who cherish her memory.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 30th, 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Virgil Nolen officiating. Entombment will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 29th, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Her children will rise up and call her blessed. Proverbs 31:28.

Mama, we love you and will miss you, but you know because we told you. You have met your Lord and Savior. Enjoy your latest adventure with daddy as you look at sights that we can only dream about. We will see you again. We promise.
