Obituary for Virginia Spence Meachum

DURHAM: Virginia Spence Meachum, 91, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Hock Family Pavilion after several years of declining health. She was born August 17, 1925 (her mother’s 18th birthday) in Richmond, VA to the late Mack Carlie Spence and Connie Fogleman Spence. The family moved to Durham the following year and she remained a Durham resident for the remainder of her life. She graduated from Lowes Grove High School in 1943. As a Lowes Grove graduate, she helped plan the reunions of that class and enjoyed keeping up with her high school classmates. She was a member of Holloway Street Baptist Church.
She was a retired employee of the American Tobacco Company having worked for 39 years in various positions. In the 1960’s she started a tax business after working part-time for H&R Block and teaching some of their classes. Her business grew and her clients were many and she formed lifelong friendships with clients and their families. She even continued to do a few tax returns into her 90th year.
Her interests were many. An avid reader, she was always ready to share a book and tell others of her latest read and favorite authors. Her home of 50 years in the Morehead Hills section of Durham was very special to her and her family and friends. It reflected her love of home and garden. She was fortunate enough to have traveled both abroad and throughout the US sharing interesting stories of her travels especially the last trip to Las Vegas with her family a few years ago.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Bobbie Teer, Wesley Spence, and Maxine Spence. Her survivors include her daughter, Brenda Pate Massengill (Ronnie) of Durham; son, Wallace Michael Pate (Anne) of Leesburg, GA; sister, Judith Spence Ford (Eddie) of Durham; grandchildren, Jason Foil (Shelley) of Lumberton, Kevin Pate of Denair, CA, Ginny Williams of Raleigh, Laura Pate of Memphis, TN; and her great grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as “Greatest Gramma”, Michael, Matthew, Katie and Kendall Foil and several nieces. Chuck Grant was a special friend to her and will cherish her memory. Special thanks to Paula Boyette who cared for her with much love and devotion in her later years.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, April 15th at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 14th at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
