Obituary for Suzanne C. Richie

CHAPEL HILL: Suzanne C. Richie, 67, passed away at her home in Chapel Hill on Friday, June 23, 2017. She was born in Charlotte, NC to the late Herman Crowell Choate and Dorothy Link Choate.

Ms. Richie is survived by her ex-husband, Philip Richie (Dawn); son, Scott Jason Richie (Talitha); daughter, Kelli Suzanne Richie; and grandchildren, Emma Kathleen Richie, Isabelle Danger Richie, Oliver Benjamin Richie.

Suzie, as she was known to friends and family, was a dedicated educator. She received her bachelor’s degree from Campbell University in Elementary Education in 1972. After graduation she assumed her first teaching position at Salemburg Elementary School in Sampson County as the reading specialist. She implemented the first program the school had to help students that had difficulty reading. Some of her students couldn’t read at all when she started. She had tremendous success in this first assignment. However, this first teaching assignment was cut short when her husband graduated from Campbell and received his commission as a second lieutenant and was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

She continued her teaching career in Hawaii. There she taught night school to GI’s and their spouses who hadn’t completed their high school education to prepare them for their GED examination. Ultimately, Suzie taught grades 1 through 6 in California and New Jersey as well. Her favorite grade was the second grade but she loved all of her students.

Many of the schools that she taught in were inner city schools in Sacramento, California. This was a shock to her initially because of the poverty and broken homes many of her students came from. But she never backed down and showed up every day in spite of the heartache working with many of these underprivileged kids could bring to the classroom. If she found out kids weren’t going to have presents under the tree at Christmas, she would make sure they did. That’s just who Suzie was.

Suzie’s first and true love were her own children. She was completely dedicated to them and perhaps the only love greater than that was for her grandchildren. Suzie will long be remembered for the love she had for her children, grandchildren as well as other’s children.

A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Sunday, July 2nd at Dayspring Fellowship Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wags 4 Tags; 5917 Grandale Dr., Durham, NC 27713.
