DURHAM: Roland Wayne Leary, 83, passed away at his home in Durham on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. He was born in Durham to the late Ervin Roland Leary and Truletta Dillard Leary. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Gwendolyn M. Leary; sisters, Mae Woolley, Adell L. Stone; brother, Harvey Leary.
Mr. Leary served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 3 years. He served as the Chief Officer of Durham ABC and the retired Sheriff of Durham County. He was a member of the Masons of Durham Lodge #352 and a member of the Triangle Shrine Club. Mr. Leary was the first graduate to ever serve on the board of Durham Tech, and he also served on the board of the NC Judicial Standards Commission. In 2000, Mr. Leary was awarded the Order of Long Leaf Pine by Governor Hunt.
Mr. Leary is survived by sons-by-marriage, Mark Pickett (Joy), Mike Pickett (Wendi); daughter-by-marriage, Bobbi Salmon; sister, Priscilla L. Lopez (Rick); 3 nieces; 5 nephews; 1 great-nephew; and 4 grandchildren-by-marriage.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 25th at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Durham with Pastor Ernest Ferrell, Dr. Marc Francis, and Rev. Jimmy Bland officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Community Baptist Church Cemetery in Raleigh. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 24th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
