Obituary for Robert "Bob" E. McGilvary

DURHAM: Robert "Bob" E. McGilvary, 87, died Thursday, September 7, 2017, at Duke University Hospital. He was born in Durham, the son of the late David Sebastian McGilvary and Essie Rigsbee McGilvany. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Brummitt McGilvary and sister, Sybil McGilvary Davis.

Papa, as he was called by his children and grandchildren, was a dedicated husband and family man, a hard worker and a man of integrity. He never met a stranger and left a lasting impression on many lives. He will be missed.

Bob graduated from Durham High School before attending UNC. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and served during the Korean War. He was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and former member of Parkview, Guess Road and Lakewood Baptist Churches. He retired from the American Tobacco Company. He held many part-time jobs including refereeing high school football, delivering mail at the UNC Athletic Department or running a concession stand at Kenan Stadium, Carmichael Auditorium or the Dean Smith Center. He was an avid Tarheel fan, especially women’s tennis. In his retirement, he enjoyed a “just for fun” golf game with his pals. He will be remembered as a great story-teller, sharing stories from his life growing up in Durham and its history. A sharp dresser, he loved to deck out in red for Christmas or all Carolina blue on game day. He loved his annual family vacations at the beach, including a wonderful week this past July at Oak Island. He enjoyed show tunes, classical and inspirational music, rarely missing a Saturday evening with Lawrence Welk.

Bob is survived by three Children: Bobetta Waynick, James Sebastian McGilvary (Nancy) and Muriel Tyler (George Walsh); Grandchildren: Richard Waynick (Vanessa), Randy, Evan and Celeste McGilvary, Jessica Tyler (Chad Harris) and Rachel Harper (Marshall); Great-Grandchildren: Logan and Hailey Harris, Lexi and Landon Harper. He is survived by his Brother, David Rigsbee McGilvary of Fairfax VA and Sister, Emily McGilvary Lang of San Diego CA.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm on Wednesday, September 13th at Clements Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11am Thursday, September 14th at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Rev. Marshall Harper officiating. A private family burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 1104 Milton Rd, Durham, NC 27712 or Hock Family Pavilion, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.
