Obituary for Rebekah "Becky" Bowden

DURHAM: Rebekah Sue Bowden (Becky) died at age 91 the morning of Friday, November 10, 2017. Becky was born on August 4, 1926 and was the daughter of Oscar and Lena Bowden. Becky's life was dedicated to service to her family, friends, church and the people of North Carolina. Her career as a public health educator started with the American Cancer Society in 1953 and ended with her retirement from the NC Division of Public Health, Oral Health Section in 1988. Becky continued to serve as a volunteer with health-related organizations until her death. Becky received many awards for her public health service including the Ernest Branch Award from the NC Public Health Association and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. She has two awards named after her - Becky S. Bowden Recognition Award by the NC Family Planning Advisory Council and the Becky S. Bowen Award by the North Carolina Public Health Association, Dental Health Section. Becky's work in promoting community water fluoridation is her most valuable contribution to the people of North Carolina. Many children in this state have decay-free teeth because of her work which started in 1966.
Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church was a center part of Becky's life. In addition to volunteering in many Church activities, she was elected as deacon and elder and was awarded a Life Membership in Presbyterian Women.
Survivors include nieces and nephews: Harold Carlton Bowden, Gatlinburg, TN; Harold Dean Bowden, Durham, NC; Helen Bowden Idol, Durham, NC; Sidney K. Powell, Dallas, TX and Asheville, NC; William Isaac Powell, Wake Forest, NC; their families; Brenda Henry, Durham and many, many friends.
Visitation will be Sunday afternoon, November 12 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Clements Funeral Service, 1105 Broad Street, Durham. Her Celebration of Life Service will be Monday, November 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, 927 W. Trinity Avenue. Burial will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Maplewood Cemetery, 1621 Duke University Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contribution be made to Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, Senior PharmAssist, 406 Rigsbee Avenue, Durham or the charity of your choice.
