DURHAM: Patricia “Pat” Layman, 92, died peacefully at her home in Croasdaile Village, Durham NC on Saturday morning April 15th. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Oliver Layman.
Pat is survived by her brother, John Goldsmith (Cheri); daughter, Bonnie Layman (Gordon Jameson); sons, Terry Layman (Susan), Timothy Layman (Lolita); grandchildren, Wayne Layman, Jason Layman (Laura), Angela Gerlich (Trey), Timothy Layman, Jr., Oliver Layman (Whitney); great-grandchildren, Ariana Ramsey, Edison Layman, Winston Layman, Ophelia Layman, Jude Layman, Savannah Layman, Wesley Gerlich, Nathan Gerlich; and cousins , Arlene Miller (Hewie Powell), Alan Miller (Ruth), Carolyn Miller Kapuler, Liu Johnston and Barbara Rosenthal.
Pat was born in Los Angeles to the late Evelyn Miller Goldsmith and Frank Higgins and raised in Chicago. She met her husband, Oliver, in 1942 while both were roller skating at the Navy Pier during WWII. They married on January 1, 1945 and, after the end of the war, moved to Dayton, Ohio where their three children were born. The family moved to Orlando, Florida in 1954. Pat retired after 25 + years with the Florida Presbyterian Synod after which she and Oliver moved to Gainesville, Florida. She continued to do part time work in Gainesville until her early 80s. Pat was very active in her church, serving as a Deacon in several Presbyterian churches. She loved to cook and bake and gave back to her community via her many volunteer activities. She traveled extensively, to Japan to meet her daughter on a round the world trip, to the Philippines where her son Tim and his family were living, to England to revisit places that her husband was stationed at during WWII and to Texas where her son Terry and his family reside. She and Oliver moved to Croasdaile Village in 2007 where she continued to be active by serving on committees and working in the gift shop. Above all she valued family, friends and her faith. She will be missed by her family.
