Obituary for Nancy Anne Mangum Scoggins

DURHAM: Nancy Mangum Scoggins, 90, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham. She was born in Hillsborough to the late W. Clarence Mangum and Bessie Neighbors Mangum. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, Malcolm Lee Scoggins; former spouses, Wayne Pope, Roscoe Taylor; son-in-law, Steve Brittain; brothers-in-law, C. Paul Roberts, Dudley Scoggins, John Waller; and sister-in-law, Loretta Scoggins Waller.

Ms. Scoggins was a member of First Baptist Church in Hillsborough. She retired after 39 years of service from Liggett Myers Tobacco Company in May of 1986.

Ms. Scoggins never met a stranger and was a loyal friend to many. She got great joy out of helping others. She loved Atlantic Beach, spending time at the Landmark with family and friends. She treasured her many friends from Liggett, loved her family; children, grandchildren, and “their friends” with all of her heart and she will be dearly missed by many.

Ms. Scoggins is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Pope Brittain (Steve), Lee Anne Scoggins King (Donnie), Susan S. Scoggins (James); step-daughter, Susan Taylor Dean (Randy); step-son, James “Butch” Taylor (June); sister, Becky Mangum Roberts; brother, William C. Mangum, Jr. (Carol); sister-in-law, Edith Anne Scoggins; grandchildren, Lisa King Carden (Matthew), Blake King (Jennifer), J.B. Scoggins, Cameron Scoggins; great-grandchildren, Bentley Blair Carden, Maverick Kingston Carden, Caroline Elisabeth King; nieces, Joyce Roberts, Paula Roberts; and nephews, Donald Roberts, Darryl Mangum, Jimmy Mangum, Wayne Waller, Gary Waller. The family would especially like to thank the devoted caregivers from Carolina House and Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham for the love and care you gave to our mother. There would never be enough words to express our love and gratitude to you all.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will follow at 12:00 noon in the Gathering Room at Clements Funeral Home, Durham.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church in Hillsborough: 201 W King St, Hillsborough, NC 27278.
