Obituary for Mildred C. Boyd

Mildred Cole Boyd passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 4, 2017. Born in Moore County February 4, 1931, Mildred was the second youngest of ten children and the youngest of four daughters of David Evander Cole and Verona Williams Cole. Predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Fenner S. Boyd, Jr., Mildred is survived by her two sons, Alan Fenner Boyd and his wife Virginia of Durham, NC, and Stephen Cole Boyd of West End, NC as well as by many nieces and nephews.
After she graduated from East Carolina Teachers College in three years, Mildred married Fenner and they both enjoyed long careers as educators in the North Carolina public school system. During their careers they worked in Beaufort, Pitt, Harnett and Durham counties, with her last job serving as librarian at Northern High School from 1974 until her retirement in 1994.
Durham, North Carolina was home for Mildred for the past fifty years and in that time she made many lasting friendships among her colleagues and her bridge clubs. Known for her keen wit and for being a “hired gun” bridge player, she was always looking for a challenging table as well as just enjoying time with her many friends.
In addition to her enjoyment of bridge, Mildred was an avid reader and accomplished pianist. For over 20 years she and Fenner shared an active retirement taking many trips to places across the United States. The beaches of North Carolina remained their favorite destination.
Honoring her wishes, no public service is planned. Memories and messages will be appreciated by the family and may be left at www.clementsfuneralservice.com
