Obituary for Mike Russell

DURHAM: Mike Russell, 73, died Thursday, January 12, 2017, at his home. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the son of the late Lillard George Russell and the late Ernestine Russell. Mike was a graduate of Appalachian State University with a Bachelors Degree in music education. Throughout Mikes lifetime music played an important role. As a student, performer (trombonist), teacher (high school band director) and over 40 year career in the music business/industry it remained a part of his life. He was an avid Tarheel fan, he loved outdoors, gardening and cooking.

Mr. Russell is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anna Maria Russell; daughter, Robyn Matisko and husband Adam; son, Chris Russell; grandchildren, Adaire and Ava Smithwick; brother, Steve Russell and wife Elaine; nephews, Jeremy and Kevin Russell; mother-in-law, Lois Jones; sister-in-laws, Pam Laurence and husband Danny along with their children, Sheree Jones and other family members.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 18th at Cole Mill Road Church of Christ with Dr. Paul Watson and Chaplain Sheree Jones officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church. There also will be a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall.
