Hillsborough: Matthew Keatts, 36, passed away Wednesday morning, January 18, 2017, with his family by his side, after a 19 month long battle with cancer. He was born in Durham, the son of Carl Lee Keatts, Jr. and Susan Hankins Keatts. Matt graduated from Riverside High School, received his B.A. in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, a B.S. in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Engineering, both from UNC-Charlotte. He was an employee of S&ME in Charlotte as a Geotechnical Engineer.
In addition to his parents, Matt is survived by his wife, Stacy Fox Keatts; daughter, Madilyn Paige Keatts (4); sister, Dara Ann Keatts; brother, David Jonathan Keatts; father and mother-in-law, David and Cindy Fox and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other extended family.
Matt was a devoted father to his daughter, Madilyn, whom he adored and was immensely proud of. He also shared a special bond with his best friends from early childhood, David Hamilton, Justin Tuttle, Steve Franklin and Jeramy Bell. His family thanks them for always being there for Matt during difficult times.
He loved his work family at S&ME and missed so much being a part of their day to day business during his illness. They too, have provided tons of support, both professional and personal, to help in any way they could. Matt was honored to have been an employee at such a respected company.
Matt was an avid Disc Golfer, who won the 2009 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championship. His disc golf family meant the world to him and he was a passionate advocate for the sport. He was a member of the Bull City Disc Club and the Charlotte Disc Golf Club. The wonderful relationships he made through his connection with Disc Golf garnered a huge support system during his illness.
Those who knew Matt best can truly agree he was one-of-a-kind. He was witty, caring, meticulous, smart and patient. He had many talents and gifts that he shared willingly and was always there to lend a hand to those in need. His family takes comfort knowing his memory will live on in all those who had the privilege to know him. His determination, courage and resilience during his cancer battle was awe-inspiring and he fought with everything he had until the very end.
A special thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Crawford, Susan Blackwell, P.A., Aviva Emmons, RN, Ben Weast, the nurses and doctors of the 9300 wing at Duke University Medical Center and all the staff at the Duke Cancer Center.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, January 22nd at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Dr. Jesse Brunson officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 to 3:45 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home.
