DURHAM: Mary Elaine Council passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2017 at the age of 63. Elaine was a lifelong resident of Durham, graduating from Durham High School and Durham Technical College. She worked at UNC for 30 years and part-time at Duke Medical Center for 20 years. She pulled for both Universities at tournament time, but her first love was Duke.
Elaine was an avid NASCAR fan and never missing a race either by attending or watching on TV Sunday afternoons. Her favorite drivers were Dale Earnhart and Tony Stewart. Elaine’s love for NASCAR was only exceeded by the love for her cats Sweet Pea, Baby and Shelby.
Elaine is preceded in death by her stepfather, James Glenwood Gay; mother, Mary Elizabeth Rigsbee Gay; half-sister, Ronda Council Crib; grandparents, Arthur and Alice Rigsbee, Rufus Aaron and Mamie Council; and special friend, Reid Smith.
She is survived by her brother, Douglas Wayne Council (Barbara); niece, Cassie Crib; nephew, Allen Crib; many cousins; uncles, Lewis Rigsbee (Jane) of Valdese, NC, Tony Rigsbee (Shirley) of Durham, NC; aunt Bobbie Nash (Richard) of Alabama; and least but not last, her beloved cat, Shelby.
The family is especially grateful to the staff and many friends at DaVita West Dialysis Center here in Durham as well as the Duke Endocrinology and Nephrology doctors and staff. The family also would like to give special thanks to Elaine’s neighbors Madeline Martin, Vickie and Grady Sandy, and Chuck Clayton who kept a watchful eye over her on a daily basis calling her family when she had an emergency and caring for her yard.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27th at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 26th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Service in Durham.
