Obituary for Malcolm S. Tilley

DURHAM Malcolm S. Tilley, 92, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Raleigh. He was born April 2, 1925 in Orange Co., the son of the late Charlie R Tilley and Daisy Poole Tilley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, La Verne Pickett Tilley; and brothers, J.S. Tilley, Gordon R. Tilley, James Wallace Tilley and Vernon L Tilley.

He is survived by his daughters, Karen Sanderson and husband Adrian of Raleigh, and Teresa Wallace and husband Craig of Charlotte.

Malcolm attended old Holt School in Durham and Mangum High School in Bahama. He left school to join the Army in 1943 and served until 1946. His occupation specialty was as warehouse foreman and he served in the Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns of WWII.

Upon returning to Durham, he met and married La Verne Pickett in 1947. He was employed for many years as an electrician and supervisor for Erwin Mills (Burlington Industries) in Durham before retiring for medical reasons. Malcolm was always a faithful and active member in his church. Until he and La Verne moved to Raleigh in 2014, he was an active member of Guess Road Baptist Church where he was a deacon and worked with the tape ministry.

Malcolm spent much of his retirement time taking care of his mother and later La Verne as her health worsened. He loved, fishing, dogs, Duke football, working outside and staying busy. He could fix anything and was always tinkering.

A funeral service will be held at 11AM Wednesday, July 19 at Guess Road Baptist Church with Rev. Daniel Tilley officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9 – 10:45 AM at the church. Burial will follow the services at Maplewood Cemetery.
