Joseph George Pietrantoni, Sr. (“Joe Piet”) passed away peacefully on March 28, 2017. He was born July 22, 1938, in Syracuse, NY, and was preceded in death by his wife of more than 56 years, Marilyn Kalode Pietrantoni. Joe was a proud father of three children, son Joe (Robin) of Durham, daughter Mary Ann (Jim) of Herndon, Virginia, son John (Nancy) of Birmingham, Alabama, and a delighted “Pop-pop” to nine grandchildren: Joe III (Kristin), Jennifer, Carrie, John-Thomas, Andrew, Wynne, Robert, Sam and Will.
Joe left his home in Syracuse, New York at the age of 18 to work with General Electric in San Salvador. In 1959, he moved to Cape Canaveral, Florida to support the MOD III radio command guidance system with GE Aerospace. In 1970, Joe left Florida to pursue a career at Duke University where he was known as a visionary leader and a friend to all. Upon his 2003 retirement from Duke as Associate Vice President of Auxiliary Services, Joe was presented the prestigious University Medal and was recognized as “an innovator who has made so many good things happen for Duke and generations of Duke students.”
During his retirement years, Joe enjoyed spending time with family and friends, life at Kerr Lake, and Duke basketball.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lake Country SPCA of Clarksville, VA (11764 US 15, Clarksville, VA 23927). Joe’s beloved dog, Pockets, was adopted from this organization.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held on Monday, April 3, at 3pm in Duke University Chapel. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 2, from 3 – 6pm at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
