Obituary for Johnnie O. Veasey, Jr.

Johnnie O. Veasey Jr. was born in Durham, N.C. on May 18, 1921 to Johnnie Otho Veasey, Sr. and Mary (Mamie) Pollard Veasey. One of ten children, he grew up on Main St. and graduated from Durham High School where he was a proud member of the baseball and football teams. He married Ruth Porter and together they had one son, Bill. Johnnie worked for Wentworth and Sloan before joining B.A. Ballou Co. to be an outside salesman who sold jewelry to stores. In his 20’s, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, and walked a path of love and goodness for the rest of his life. Johnnie completed his work on earth on August 3, 2017.

Johnnie was an active member of Northgate Chapel for decades where he served as a choir director, Sunday school teacher, and an Elder. He was proud of his involvement in building the Pittsboro Christian Village and leaves behind a legacy that continues to benefit many.

Johnnie loved to sing and was known to break out in song as he went happily through life. He golfed. He loved people. When in his 70’s, he drove a Ferrari and wore a commemorative Ferrari jacket which stimulated conversation even with strangers. Chocolate was his favorite food group. His favorite book was the Bible. He loved life and lived his to please the Lord Almighty. Johnnie taught by example how to live a good life and in his last week of life, with a twinkle in his eye said, “I am richer than you, richer than I can realize….” He and his lessons will continue in spirit each day as if he were here in body. Indeed, Johnnie was a blessing to all who knew him.

Johnnie is survived by his grandson, John Veasey, daughter-in-law, Joan Veasey, his best friend, Janie Diehl, and many friends who respected his Christian living and loved him dearly.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, August 14 at Northgate Chapel officiated by Mr. Earl White and Mr. Gibby White. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Northgate Chapel, 3207 Duke Homestead Rd, Durham, NC 27705.

The Veasey family would like to recognize the Diehl family for all of their love, kindness and support through the past several years and more importantly, during these last few trying months caring for my Grandfather like he was their own. We owe them a great debt of gratitude.

“A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others.” (Wizard of Oz) Johnnie was truly loved.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you. And give you peace.
