Obituary for John P. Hudson

A life well lived.

DURHAM: John “Rock” Hudson, 79, died Saturday, January 21st, at the Hock Family Pavilion in Durham. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Harriet; his son Geoff and daughter-in-law Mandy, daughter Melanie and son-in-law Larry, grandchildren; John, Connor, Emma, Morgan and Bailey.

John was born and raised in Wadesboro North Carolina and, according to his childhood friends, it was “Johnny” who organized their many activities including team sports and a bottle cap baseball game he invented. In high school he was the leading rusher for the football team (though it took much debate and meticulous research to prove the feat). He was also active in the boy scouts and was one of few who received the Eagle Scout designation.

After high school he attended East Carolina University where he majored in English and earned a masters degree in Education. John was one of the founders of Lambda Chi fraternity where he earned the nickname “Rock” for his cool persona. The exploits of him and his fraternity brothers were legendary and only grew in magnitude as the years passed. This special group of characters remained lifelong friends that reunited often in Myrtle Beach to recount their many adventures.

Upon graduating he married his college sweetheart, Harriet, and became a sports writer for the Newport News Daily Press. In1964 he and Harriet moved to Durham North Carolina and began a very successful career as a manager and advisor in the financial industry.

His lifelong love of sports kept him involved with his Alma Mater, East Carolina, where he served as President of the Pirate Club and received an honored by the School of Health and Human Performance. In recognition of his work with the ECU Educational Foundation, the endowment was renamed the Bennett-Hudson Fund in 2005. Later in life he also greatly enjoyed serving on the board of the NCCU Foundation.

John loved his grandchildren and was ever present in their lives and supportive of their interests. He would often travel to see Connor, Morgan or Baily play softball, attend one of Emma’s plays, or share an ECU game day experience with John Geoffrey. To him they meant the world.

His service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home in Durham from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 3, 2017.
