Obituary for John Lindsay Efland III

EFLAND: John Lindsay Efland, III, 77, passed at his home in Efland on Monday, January 8, 2018. He was born in the home in Efland on May 31, 1940 to the late John Lindsay Efland, Jr. and Kathleen Jones Efland.

Lindsay attended Efland Elementary School, Hillsborough High School, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1962-1965, including a 13 month tour of duty in South Korea. Lindsay worked with the Orange County Rescue Squad from 1968 and helped found the Efland Fire Department in 1971. He was the first Chief of the Efland Fire Department, serving from 1972-1976. He taught first aid courses to Chapel Hill and Carrboro Rescue Squads. Lindsay was also the Chief of the Orange County Rescue Squad and also was an Eagle Scout. He started Lindsay Hosiery Mill in 1965 after leaving the Army. He later joined Efland Hosiery Mill, eventually becoming a co-owner with his brothers and father. He served on the Orange County School Board from 1982-1988, Orange County Economic Development Commission, and the Orange County Zoning Task Force. He served on an Advisory Board with BB&T for several years. In recent years he entered into a partnership with Masonboro Boat Works. Lindsay was a lifetime member of Efland Presbyterian Church, serving as organist, elder, youth leader, Sunday school teacher, and Cemetery Committee member.

Lindsay was an avid photographer, wood worker and admirer of nature. One of his joys was to spend time at Wrightsville Beach and to visit with his many friends. His greatest joy was his four grandchildren.

Lindsay is survived by his wife of 54 years, Knox Jones Efland; son, Lindsay Efland, IV and wife Katie; daughter, Anna Efland King and husband Jim; and grandchildren, Morgan Efland, Logan King, Emily Efland, Davis King; sister, Linda Efland Richardson and husband Skip; brothers, Donald Efland and wife Kathy, Doug Efland and wife Marsha; and many loved nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, January 12 at Clements Funeral Home in Hillsborough. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, January 13 at Efland Presbyterian Church, 3700 US 70, Efland, NC with Rev. Cherrie Henry officiating.
