Jewel F. Lewis, 98, of Washington, D.C. passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 while receiving care in Durham, N.C. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Feldman and Pauline Rook Feldman. Mrs. Lewis was also preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Charles Lewis, and two sisters, Mrs. Sue Reit and Mrs. Gerry Stich.
Jewel was one of the few women in her generation who worked as an attorney in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During her 42 years of service, she became chair and chief judge of the Board of Contract Appeals. After retirement, she worked pro bono as general counsel for the Service Core of Retired Executives (SCORE), and was an advocate for the Paget Disease Foundation. An avid bridge player and lover of many outdoor activities, Jewel had a great sense of humor and could play a mean bugle. She was an active member of the Washington Hebrew Congregation for over 35 years.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by two sons- Terrell Lewis; William W. Lewis and wife, Kathy; a daughter, Kathryn “Kate” Lewis and husband, Ted; five grandchildren-Erica Wynne and husband, Dave; Beth Lewis; Jennifer Oxford and husband, Brian; Rebekah Lewis; William Harrison Lewis; and three great-grandchildren, Catherine Oxford, Andy Wynne and Zoey Wynne.
