James Franklin Fuquay, Jr. died Wednesday, January 18, 2017 after a courageous battle against cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Madge Fuquay and James F. Fuquay, Sr; his maternal grandparents, Will and Bertie Davis; his paternal grandparents, Cecil Fuquay and Effie Outen; and his sister, Jamie Fuquay Baird.
Mr. Fuquay is married to Jana Wood Fuquay of Durham. He has three children, James “Jimmy” C. Fuquay of Bahama, Corey Stallings of Durham and Gail Watson of Austin, TX. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Alexis Stallings of Durham, Alexandria Poston of Bahama and Bristol Watson of Durham. He also has a brother, Jerry Wayne Fuquay, Sr. and wife Shirley of Durham, John Fuquay of Pittsboro, and Kenneth Fuquay and wife Lisa of Moorpark, California.
Mr. Fuquay was educated in Durham schools and graduated from Southern Illinois University. Mr. Fuquay enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy SEABEES. In 1976, he was selected as the first SEABEE of the year for the Pacific Fleet. He served twenty eight years in numerous conflicts including Desert Shield and Desert Storm before retiring in 1992 as Force Command Master Chief of the Pacific Fleet SEABEES at Pearl Harbor. After retiring from the military, Mr. Fuquay worked for the City of Durham Water Department before joining Construction Control Corporation in Columbia, SC. He was proud to oversee the building of schools on the Outer Banks, Cherokee and Williamston. He finished his career with Kellogg Brown & Root in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mr. Fuquay will be dearly missed by his family, many friends and community.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 24th at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jeff McCarthy officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, January 23rd at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
