Obituary for James (Don) Donald McClintock

DURHAM: James (Don) Donald McClintock 82, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Hock Family Pavilion after an extended illness. He was born in Durham to the late William Bell McClintock and Grace McDonald McClintock. He was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Leslie Mabe McClintock who raised him from age 2; niece, Christi Champion and Johnnie Bryant, who was a life-long mentor.

Mr. McClintock graduated from Durham High School in 1955 where he excelled in football and basketball. He attended Greenbriar Military School in West Virginia where he was named “Joe Cadet” as well as many other accolades; he also attended the University of North Carolina. He coached various little league teams over the years. He served on the Safety Committee, Herald Sun Golf Committee, was a member of the Durham Sports Club and past member of Willowhaven Country Club. He is a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He loved his grandchildren and they always looked forward to “Poppy” attending all their activities. Prior to his retirement, he was in the furniture sales business.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sybil Nicholson McClintock of Durham, sons Don (Mary), Keith (Amy), Bill (Kim); grandchildren, Brittany McGee (Mitch), Ashley Garrett (Jason), Katie McClintock, Jackson McClintock, Emma McClintock, Will McClintock; great-grandchild, Brylee McGee; brothers, Bill (Bonnie) McClintock, Bob (Betty) McClintock; sister, Pat Day. Also surviving are nieces, Beth Bogue (Cameron); Traci Vaughn (Mark), Kristi Stone (Phillip); and nephews Kyle McClintock, Michael Champion (Staci), Patrick Day, Brenon Day (Janet) and Forest Day.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1320 Umstead Rd, Durham, NC 27712; Duke Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Dr, Ste 101, Durham, NC 27704 or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 15 at 2:00 PM at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with the Rev. Bryan Faggart officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 to 1:45 PM at Clements Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank Dr. John Kihm and staff and Belinda Person who assisted in his care during his illness.
