Obituary for Hollace Ann Laws Selph

DURHAM: Hollace Ann Laws Selph passed away on June 10, 2017 after a long illness. Hollace was born on January 12, 1948 at Watts Hospital in Durham, NC to Thelma Leigh Renn Laws and Colonel L. Laws. Hollace grew up in Durham, graduated from Northern High School in 1966, and was Miss Northern HS her senior year. She was presented at the 1966 Durham Cotillion Ball.

Hollace graduated from St. Andrews University in 1970 with a double major in English and History. She began her career in education interning during the summer of 1965 at Pinehurst High School. Her first teaching position was in 1970 with Durham County Schools at Githens Jr. High School, where she taught gifted and talented English. She was also the Student Counsel Advisor for many years. When Githens JH became a middle school, Hollace then taught ninth grade Honors English and Journalism at Jordan High School until she retired in 1997. Hollace had a passion for life and teaching and truly excelled as a teacher and instructor. She kept up with many of her students over the years.

Hollace’s career at Duke TIP began as the Academic Coordinator in 1991. However, the role expanded to the Senior Director or Educational Programs of the TIP program before leaving in 2012.

She spent many of her years as a teacher traveling all over Europe. She took students on many of these educational spring trips.

Hollace was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by brothers, Robert B. Laws (Kelly) of Winston-Salem and William G. Laws (Cindy) of Durham; nephews, Chris, Michael and Walt; and niece, Anne McLain Laws. Hollace recently celebrated having two great-nieces, Lily and Savannah; and one great-nephew, Will.

The visitation will be held from 7 to 9 pm, Thursday, June 15th at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 16th at Clements Funeral Chapel with Dr. Paula Gilbert officiating. Interment will be at Maplewood Cemetery following the services.
