ROUGEMONT – Hans H. Keizer, 85, of Rougemont passed away Saturday, February 25, 2017 at his residence. Born in Amersfoort, The Netherlands, Mr. Keizer was the son of the late Wilhelmus Jozeph Keizer and Maria Josephina Maas Keizer. He was preceded in death by his special dog, Joy.
Hans is survived by a son, Ronald Keizer, of Bahama; two daughters, Astrid Keizer, of Palmyra, VA, and Caroline Keizer and partner August Jenkins, of Durham; grandchildren, Josie Terry, Hannah Keizer and Nicholas Keizer; and special caregiver and friend, Karen Gadson. He also leaves behind Dixie, a dog who cherished him in his last years.
Hans attended university for 3 years at Universiteit Utrecht. He then immigrated to the United States 49 years ago with his family in tow at the invitation to come and work in a laboratory at Duke University as a biomedical research chemist with the late Dr. Frans Jobsis. He thought the opportunity too great to pass up and was in for the adventure. During his career at Duke he worked on several projects in the field of infra-red light spectrophotometry allowing the measurement of oxygen levels in tissue and blood. This work led to having his name on several patents that he shared with colleagues.
Hans enjoyed many things in life including sharing good food with family, playing card games with his family, reading mystery books and books about his hometown of Amersfoort and World War II, Big Band jazz, watching Premier League soccer and old black and white movies, and eating spicy food--the hotter the better. He was forever a teacher to his children about their home country and its language. Hans never met a stranger, always ready to chat with new people.
There will be no services. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the home of Rita Keizer, 5041 Green Oak Drive, Durham.
