Obituary for Garry E. Umstead

BAHAMA: Garry E. Umstead, 80, died Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at Brookdale Assisted Living. He was the son of the late Ewell Lyon Umstead and Lucille Thompson Umstead. He was born in Durham and a longtime resident of Bahama. Mr. Umstead was a member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church and Bahama Ruritan Club. He was a graduate of Elon University and retired from the Durham County Board of Commissioners serving as Clerk.

Mr. Umstead is survived by his brother, Larry Lyon Umstead of Bahama.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, September 15, at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church.

Active pallbearers will be Norman Beaver, Tommy Mangum, Bruce Knott, Lin Needham, Eugene Crabtree and Jim Bock. Honorary pallbearers will be Alton Mangum, Fred Luxton, Jr., Carly Smith, Reggie Wade, Harvey McQueen and Chris Crabtree.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 1605 Bahama Rd, Bahama, NC 27503.
