Obituary for Frances Apple

Frances Apple, known to some as “Fanny” went home to our Lord and Savior, December 13th, 2017, she was 87 years young.
Born in Charlotte, Frances grew up in Morganton NC. She was the daughter of Vera Gertrude Starling Easom and Hiram Gray Easom of Johnston County, NC. She is survived by her children, Frances Amber Apple of Lexington, NC and April Suzanne Apple of Durham, NC. Two grandchildren, Robert Harvey Snow and Maranda Moore Sawyers, her husband Cecil Sawyers also of Lexington, NC and three great grandchildren, Abagail, Aiden and Ava Grace Sawyers.
Frances graduated from Morganton High School in 1948, Campbell College in 1951 and Grace Hospital in X-Ray Technology in 1952. Frances then moved to Greensboro, NC where she started her career in X-Ray Technology at Wesley Long Hospital as their Chief Technologist. She then worked with Dr. William D. Wright, Orthopaedic Surgeon for 14 years. In 1970 Frances moved with her children to Durham, NC to work at Duke University Medical Center. Frances retired from Duke University Medical Center in 2000 after 30 years of service.
Frances was very involved in her professional radiology societies at both the state, North Carolina Society of Radiologic Technology (NCSRT Inc.) and national, American Society of Radiologic Technology (ASRT) levels where she served on numerous committees eventually serving as President of the ASRT in 1998. She was a Life member of both professions and a Fellow of the ASRT. She was a mentor to many and was devoted to the profession of Radiologic Technology. She will be remembered by many for her sense of professionalism and desire to help those who came before her needing imaging.
Frances was also active in her church, Waypoint Church of Chapel Hill, NC. She gave her time and gifts to the Women on Mission ministry to help homeless children of Durham County, packing bag after bag of food so the children would not go hungry on the weekends and buying the children gifts at Christmas so they would have something under the tree. She was also Chairwoman of the Homebound. She wanted to make sure those members who could no longer attend due to illness were not forgotten. Even though she herself could not get out to visit them she would call them to check up and see if they needed anything and remembered them with cards at their birthdays, on holidays and supplied them with daily scripture readings.
Frances was loved for her sense of humor, her beautiful smile and her caring spirit for those in need. She will be missed by many across the United States who knew her professionally and by her friends and brothers and sisters in Christ who cared and loved her here close to home.
Visitation will be held at 1pm at Waypoint Church, 6804 Farrington Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27517 on Saturday December 30th, 2017 at 1 pm with a celebration of life to follow at 2 pm.
