Obituary for Evelyn Lucille Jensen Chance

DURHAM: Evelyn Lucille Jensen Chance a treasured Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Friend, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. The love of her life, Vester J. (VJ) Chance, preceded her in death on January 3rd, 1990, but her love never faltered. Evelyn and “VJ” met and fell in love at a UFO Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at dances that VJ was overseeing. They were married in Sioux Falls, SD on December 24th, 1943. Evelyn’s death brings to a close a life of loving dedication and service to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and her churches! She is also predeceased by her parents, Neils and Serena Katrina Jensen; her brothers, Alvin and Roland Jensen; and a sister, Betty Jensen Wilkes.

She is survived by her children, Michael V. Chance of Wilmington, NC, Barbara L. Chance and Beverly Chance Clark (Larry) of Durham; seven grandchildren, Karen Addison (Mike), David Chance (Karen), Katrina Clark Cooke, Kimberly Clark Nolte (Kevin) and Christopher Clark (Tiffany); eleven great grandchildren, Chance Addison, Harrison and Anna Kate Chance, Tyler, Caitlyn, Rainey and Addyson Clark, Logan and Camden Cooke and Alex and Caroline Nolte. She is also survived by her sister, Delores (Leroy) Butenschoen; her sister-in-law, Pat Chance Chowning; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Evelyn was born in Viborg, South Dakota to Danish immigrants on March 7, 1922. She grew up in the Viborg/Davis/Hooker, SD area, and the family later moved to a farm in Marvin, SD. Evelyn attended the local school until the 9th grade, at which time she left home at the age of 14 to live with some friends in Milbank where she attended Milbank High School. During the last 65+ years, she has attended almost all of her high school reunions! After marrying VJ (after he was discharged from the Army), they moved to VJ’s home state of North Carolina. Evelyn became a stay at home wife, mother and extraordinary cook (three meals a day for 40 plus years). They spent several years in Smithfield, NC, followed by several years in Goldsboro, NC, nine years in New Bern, NC and moved to Durham, NC in 1960. She and VJ thoroughly enjoyed going out with friends, especially to the Durham Elks Lodge dances. Evelyn made sure that her children were raised in a Christian home and was a wonderful example of what a wife, mother and Christian should be. She was very dedicated to her churches – First Baptist Church of New Bern, NC, Holloway Street Baptist Church, Grace Baptist Church and Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Durham, NC. She served in many capacities, but her favorite roles were that of Women’s Missionary Union President, both at the local church level and at the Yates Association level.

Although Evelyn was a stay at home Mother, she decided to start selling Avon in 1969, the year her youngest child, Beverly, went to college. She continued to sell Avon for the next forty plus years and, in fact, was still selling when she was 94 years old. Evelyn will be dearly missed, but never forgotten!

The funeral service celebrating her life will be held at Durham Memorial Baptist Church, Durham, NC at 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 26th and officiated by Pastor Ed Denton and Dr. Marc Frances. The family will receive visitors Thursday 12:30 to 1:45 pm before the service at Durham Memorial Baptist and at other times at the home of Larry and Beverly Clark. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
