Obituary for Eugene Randle Smith

Eugene (Gene) Randle Smith, 76, died Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Durham, the son of the late Albert Smith Sr. and the late Mamie Elizabeth (Beasley) Smith. He was preceded in death by his son, Tony Strickland; and brothers, Albert Smith Jr. and Johnny Smith.
Gene graduated from Durham High School and lived most of his life in the city. He had a varied career as a truck driver, charter bus driver for Southern Coach and as a printer. With his wife, Judy, he owned and operated Economy Copy Center on West Main and Gregson streets near downtown Durham in the early 1980s. He retired as a truck driver for the Durham County school system.
After the death of Albert Jr. in 1973, Gene and Judy helped care for Albert Jr.’s children and their mother, Albert Jr.’s first wife, Priscilla Scott Turner. When Cilla died in 1975, Gene and Judy took in three of Al’s four boys for a full house of five children.
Gene is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judy (Brinkley) Smith; daughter, Sherri Strickland; nephews, Al Smith III and wife Karen, Mike Smith and wife Lesa, Scott Talbott Smith and wife Brooke; grandchildren, Angie Mayes, Chris Mayes, Brian Smith, Andrew Strickland, Sam Strickland, Isabella Smith, Tobias Jonathan Smith, Frankie Elizabeth Smith; sister, Hope Jones; and great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Marlee and AJ Strickland.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, April 22, 2017, at McMannen United Methodist Church in Durham. The family will receive friends following the service at the church fellowship hall.
