Obituary for Ethel Weathers

DURHAM: Ethel Smith Weathers died on Friday, October 13, 2017 at home surrounded by her loving family. Ethel was the daughter of the late Lewis Mottie Smith and Iola Dickerson Smith. She was born in Granville County, NC in 1921.

Mrs. Weathers graduated from St. Pauls High School in Robeson County, NC. During WWII, she worked as a switchboard operator in Fredricksburg, VA. In March of 1947 she married the love of her life, James Garland Weathers who preceded her in death in 2002, they were married for 55 years. Ethel was a wonderful wife, an outstanding mother, a loving Grandmother and a blessed Great-Grandmother. Ethel was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church where she taught pre-school for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Grace Bible Class.

Mrs. Weathers is survived by her daughter, Dianne Weathers Cronin of Durham and son, James Garland Weathers Jr. and wife, Betsy Weathers of Raleigh. She was the proud grandmother of 3 grandchildren, Joshua Weathers and wife, Karen of Wake Forest Kristy Weathers Stephenson and husband, Rynal of Raleigh and Erinn Cronin Parrish and husband, Robbie of Ft Worth, TX. Ethel was extremely proud of her 8 great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Parrish, Lauren Parrish, Elizabeth Parrish, Ella Weathers, Olivia Weathers, Reece Stephenson, Carson Stephenson and Bennett Stephenson. One of her granddaughters wrote "Early this afternoon, my beautiful and sweet 96-year-old Grand mommy took her last breath, after a short battle with breast cancer. I'm sure she would agree, she had a blessed life. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with every ounce of her being. She will now be reunited with the love of her life, my grandfather, we love you”.

The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice who provided such wonderful and loving care over the last several months.

Visitation will be Monday, October 16th from 6pm till 8pm at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. There will be a graveside ceremony on Tuesday October 17th at 2pm at Maplewood Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clements Funeral Service, Inc.
