Obituary for Edythe B. Proctor

DURHAM -- Edythe B. Proctor, 98, died Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at First Health Hospice & Palliative Care in Pinehurst, NC. Born in Portsmouth City, VA., Edythe was the daughter of the late Thomas James Bain and Elizabeth Frazier Bain. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Hayes Proctor and her son, Wesley Thomas Proctor.

Edythe was a first-generation American, born to parents from Scotland. Her father was an artist whose work took the family to several cities in the United States. Though she grew up in Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, and Lafayette, LA, Edythe made her home in Durham. She was the manager of Addison’s Play World for 40 years, where she made lifelong friendships. After Addison’s Play World, she continued to work into her 80s, “taking care of the old ladies,” as she said, at the King’s Daughters Home. Edythe was a strong, loving woman who truly enjoyed life and spending time with her family. She spent the last nine years of her life living happily alongside her sister, June Bain Lapping, in Carthage, NC. They had great adventures together even up until her last days. Edythe said it was her Scottish blood that kept her determined to live such a long, full life.

The family would like to thank her sister for the years of good times, laughter, and love that they shared.

Edythe is survived by her daughter, June Proctor Crane; grandchildren, April P. Pearson (Chad), Courtney M. Sims (David), Morgan M. Moore (Robbie), Michael C. Crane, Adair-Hayes Brown (Philip); great grandchildren, Frazier, Bryson, and Worth Sims, and Lila Crane; son-in-laws, George L. Crane, Jr. and George C. Milton; sister, June B. Lapping; nieces and nephews, Sherwood (Trisha), Alan (Anna), Stephan (Rebecca), and Susan.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 23 at Maplewood Cemetery with Mr. Stephan Lapping officiating.
